How do you reinstall Windows Defender under Windows Vista?

In Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows Defender is not listed in the Programs and Features Control Panel previously known as the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel.  Therefore, you cannot remove and then reinstall this application using the normal Add/Remove process.  However, the Windows Vista System File Check (SFC) will reinstall Windows Defender. To reinstall Windows Defender, please do the following: Delete the program folder entitled C:\Program Files\Windows Defender. Click Start - Run. Type: cmd Hit Enter. Type: sfc /scannow Hit Enter. Wait for the scan process to complete. Upon completion, reboot the computer. Windows Defender now runs as normal. Please Note: You may encounter the error message 0x800705b4 when attempting to start Windows Defender.  If you are using Microsoft Security Essentials, it is normal to encounter this error message.  Microsoft Security Essentials is both an antivirus and antispyware application.  Therefore, Windows Defender...

HTTP/1.1 503 Service Unavailable

When you attempt to login to Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA), you may encounter the error message HTTP/1.1 503 Service Unavailable.  You may also find that Microsoft Outlook using Microsoft Exchange will not open.  The Microsoft Exchange Information Store depends upon the NT LM Security Support Provider Service.  On the Server, insure that the NT LM Security Support Provider Servuce is set to Automatic and start the NT LM Security Support Provider Service.  Now start the Microsoft Exchange System Attendant Service and then the Microsoft Exchange Information Store Service. The issue will then be resolved.

Microsoft Windows Update - Page Cannot Be Displayed

If you browse to Microsoft Windows Update using Microsoft Internet Explorer and receive the error message, Page Cannot Be Displayed, first insure that the System Clock in the lower right-hand corner of your screen is set to the correct time, timezone, month, day and year.  You may also need to reset Internet Explorer to Defaults via Start - Control Panel - Internet Options - Restore Advanced Settings and Reset.  If this does not correct your problem, you may be infected with the TDSS Rootkit. Sometimes computers become infected with the TDSS Rootkit which forces the web browser to popup unusual websites or prevents the user from going to Windows Updates.  Additionally, there are a number of other effects related to this infection.  Normally when Malwarebytes Anti-Malware has been fully updated and a scan has been fully completed, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware should find and fully remove the TDSS Rootkit.  But if it does not, Kaspersky has created a free tool en...

Zone Alarm Firewall Review

It is my professional opinion that Zone Alarm is a completely unnecessary application.  When Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 1 were released, the Windows Operating System did not include a firewall.  From 2001 to 2004, it was therefore reasonable to install a third-party firewall application such as Zone Alarm.  After the release of Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 in 2004 and the inclusion of the Microsoft Windows Firewall, it is my opinion that the use of any third-party software-based firewall application became completely unnecessary.  Further more, it has been my personal observation that Zone Alarm and other third-party firewall applications can prevent Microsoft Windows from operating properly.  This is because of one major tenet of third-party firewall applications - the assumption that users of the Microsoft Windows Operating System have a technical understanding of which applications, drivers and services are required...

Troubleshooting A Rebooting Computer

If the cause of a rebooting computer is not being recorded in the Event Viewer - System or Event Viewer - Application, it can be difficult to determine the source of the problem. It is not uncommon for a hardware-related problem to cause the computer to reboot and the error to not be captured by the Event Viewer.  To force Windows to stop on error and to display an error on screen if one is available, please use the following steps: Click Start - Control Panel - System. Click the Advanced tab. Click the Settings button under Startup and Recovery. In the Startup and Recovery window, uncheck the Automatically restart check box. Click OK. You may also wish to review the CMOS/BIOS of the computer to see if there are any settings related to rebooting the computer on error.  You may also need to change this setting to prevent the computer from rebooting. If you are unable to identify an Event ID related to this issue within the Event Viewer, following are the primary causes of a ...
