In Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows Defender is not listed in the Programs and Features Control Panel previously known as the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel. Therefore, you cannot remove and then reinstall this application using the normal Add/Remove process. However, the Windows Vista System File Check (SFC) will reinstall Windows Defender.
To reinstall Windows Defender, please do the following:
Please Note: You may encounter the error message 0x800705b4 when attempting to start Windows Defender. If you are using Microsoft Security Essentials, it is normal to encounter this error message. Microsoft Security Essentials is both an antivirus and antispyware application. Therefore, Windows Defender will not start when Microsoft Security Essentials is running on the computer.

- Delete the program folder entitled C:\Program Files\Windows Defender.
- Click Start - Run.
- Type: cmd
- Hit Enter.
- Type: sfc /scannow
- Hit Enter.
- Wait for the scan process to complete.
