chkdsk - Cannot open volume for direct access - Unable to gain exclusive use of drive

When attempting to run chkdsk, you may encounter the messages "Cannot open volume for direct access" or "Unable to gain exclusive use of drive."  In the Event Viewer, you also see Event ID: 11 Source: Disk and Event ID: 129 Source: Disk.  When this issue occurs, it is typically due to one or more of the following issues:
  1. PC Tools Spyware Doctor has been installed.

  2. Spybot Search & Destroy has been installed.

  3. Zone Alarm has been installed.

  4. Symantec AutoProtect has been installed.

  5. Crypkey Software has been installed.

  6. BitDefender has been installed.

  7. TDSS Infection.

To resolve this issue:
  1. Perform a System Restore.

  2. Run Ccleaner.

  3. Run Malwarebytes in Safe Mode after Updating Malwarebytes.

  4. Run Kaspersky TDSSKiller and/or Symantec FixTDSS.

  5. Uninstall PC Tools Spyware Doctor and Symantec AutoProtect.

  6. Using Add/Remove Programs, uninstall Zone Alarm.

  7. Using Add/Remove Programs, uninstall Spybot Search & Destroy.

  8. Using Add/Remove Programs, uninstall CrypKey Software Licensing System.

  9. Using the Symantec Removal Tool, remove all Symantec software.

  10. Using the BitDefender removal tool, remove BitDefender.

  11. Reboot the computer.

  12. Using regedit, browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\BootExecute

  13. Confirm that the BootExecute registry key has the following information: autocheck autochk *

  14. Browse to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ and delete the file IKHLAYER.SYS

  15. Reboot the computer.

  16. Install the latest Service Pack for Microsoft Windows.

This issue has been resolved.

Event ID: 7001 - Source: VSS - Unable to create a shadow copy

When using Microsoft Windows Server, you may encounter the error message: "Unable to create a shadow copy."  In the Event Viewer, you may find the following Event: "Event ID: 7001 - Source: VSS - Unable to create a shadow copy."  This event involves the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).  Most likely the Server was rebooted while creating a Shadow Copy.  Many websites describe deleting or renaming the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WBEM directory used by Windows Management Instrumentation to resolve this issue.  This is not correct.  Following are the steps to resolve this issue: Double-click My Computer. Right-mouse click the Hard Drive causing the problem. Click the Shadow Copies tab. Select the appropriate Volume. Click Disable. Click OK. How do you stop an unstoppable Windows Service?

You may encounter a Windows Service in Services that has the buttons for Start, Stop, Pause and Resume greyed out.  If you attempt to stop the Service using sc stop [servicename], you encounter the error message: "The requested control is not valid for this service."  To resolve this issue, please perform the following steps: Click Start - Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services.
