When attempting to run chkdsk, you may encounter the messages "Cannot open volume for direct access" or "Unable to gain exclusive use of drive." In the Event Viewer, you also see Event ID: 11 Source: Disk and Event ID: 129 Source: Disk. When this issue occurs, it is typically due to one or more of the following issues:
- PC Tools Spyware Doctor has been installed.
- Spybot Search & Destroy has been installed.
- Zone Alarm has been installed.
- Symantec AutoProtect has been installed.
- Crypkey Software has been installed.
- BitDefender has been installed.
- TDSS Infection.
- Perform a System Restore.
- Run Ccleaner.
- Run Malwarebytes in Safe Mode after Updating Malwarebytes.
- Run Kaspersky TDSSKiller and/or Symantec FixTDSS.
- Uninstall PC Tools Spyware Doctor and Symantec AutoProtect.
- Using Add/Remove Programs, uninstall Zone Alarm.
- Using Add/Remove Programs, uninstall Spybot Search & Destroy.
- Using Add/Remove Programs, uninstall CrypKey Software Licensing System.
- Using the Symantec Removal Tool, remove all Symantec software.
- Using the BitDefender removal tool, remove BitDefender.
- Reboot the computer.
- Using regedit, browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\BootExecute
- Confirm that the BootExecute registry key has the following information: autocheck autochk *
- Browse to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ and delete the file IKHLAYER.SYS
- Reboot the computer.
- Install the latest Service Pack for Microsoft Windows.
