Microsoft Outlook - Receiving reported error (0x80040600) Unknown Error 0x80040600

Within Microsoft Outlook, you may encounter the error message: "Receiving reported error (0x80040600) Unknown Error 0x80040600."  This error message indicates that the Outlook mail file has become corrupt.  A mail client cannot store infinite amounts of information.  Routinely, information needs to be compacted and/or archived.   When information is not routinely discarded, compacted or archived - the mail file will become corrupt.  When this occurs, the mail file needs to be repaired.

Please perform the following steps to repair and then compact the mail file:
  1. Click Start - Run.

  2. If you are using Microsoft Outlook 2002, type: %ProgramFiles%\Common Files\System\Mapi\1033\

    If you are using Microsoft Outlook 2003, type: %ProgramFiles%\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033\

    If you are using Microsoft Outlook 2007, type: %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\Office12\

    If you are using Microsoft Outlook 2010, type: %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\Office14\

  3. Click OK.

  4. Double-click ScanPST.exe

  5. Browse to the location of your Outlook PST file.

    Microsoft Windows XP - Office 2007 and previous versions:

    %USERPROFILE%\LOCAL SETTINGS\APPLICATION DATA\MICROSOFT\OUTLOOK\

    Microsoft Windows XP - Office 2010:

    %USERPROFILE%\DOCUMENTS\OUTLOOK FILES\

    Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows 7 - Office 2007 and previous versions:

    %LOCALAPPDATA%\MICROSOFT\OUTLOOK\

    Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows 7 - Office 2010:

    %USERPROFILE%\DOCUMENTS\OUTLOOK FILES\

  6. Click Start.  The repair process may take a number of hours.  Please allow the repair process to complete.

  7.  Once the repair process has completed, click Start - Control Panel - Mail.

  8. Click Data Files.

  9. With your PST file selected, click Settings.

  10. Click Compact Now.

When using Microsoft Windows Server, you may encounter the error message: "Unable to create a shadow copy."  In the Event Viewer, you may find the following Event: "Event ID: 7001 - Source: VSS - Unable to create a shadow copy."  This event involves the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).  Most likely the Server was rebooted while creating a Shadow Copy.  Many websites describe deleting or renaming the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WBEM directory used by Windows Management Instrumentation to resolve this issue.  This is not correct.  Following are the steps to resolve this issue: Double-click My Computer.
