Periodically, you may need to access a device on a separate subnet than your present subnet. For example, your present subnet is 192.168.0.X but you need to access a device in the range of 125.1.7.X. Often, a technician will change their LAN IP Address to an IP Address within the range of the separate subnet. Then when the technician has finished working with the device on the separate subnet, they would change the LAN IP Address back to its original settings. However, you may find it is far more beneficial to have access to both subnets at the same time using a Virtual IP Address. To add a Virtaul IP Address to your Local Area Network Adapter, please follow these steps:
http://www.smartnetadmin.com
- Click Start - Control Panel - Network Settings.
- Right-mouse click your Network Adapter and click Properties.
- If you have not already done so, set your LAN IP Address to a Static IP Address within the range of your present subnet. For example, 192.168.0.150. Set the Gateway and DNS Servers. Apply these settings. To add a Virtual IP Address to a LAN IP Address that is using DHCP requires changes to the Windows Registry which is beyond the scope of this document. Please set your LAN IP Address to a Static IP Address.
- Click Advanced.
- Click Add.
- Enter the Virtual IP Address within the range of the separate subnet. For example, 125.1.7.5.
- Enter the Virtual Subnet Mask utilized by the separate subnet. For example, 255.0.0.0.
- Click Add.
- Click OK.
- Click OK.
