In this blog post, your objective is to establish a firewall to protect your internal network from external threats over the internet. Your plan is to obtain a Public IP Address from Qwest in order to assign the Public IP Address to your firewall.
The first item to mention is that this configuration does not require Transparent Bridging. You will be using PPPoE. The second item to mention is that your firewall will require a Gateway IP Address on the External Network Port. Qwest only provides a Gateway IP Address when you purchase a Block of Static/Public IP Addresses.
Once you have obtained a Block of Static/Public IP Addresses, you should confirm that Qwest has provided you with the following information: the Block of IP Addresses, the Subnet, the Gateway, DNS Servers, your Qwest Username and your Qwest Password.

- make sure router is properly authenticated, connected to internet
- if we set our LAN interface on our laptop/desktop statically to 192.168.0.x you should still be able to talk to the modem on 192.168.0.1 if you need to.
- Open a web browser and type 192.168.0.1 in the address bar.
- Select Advanced Setup.
- Select WAN Settings.
- Select PPPoE.
- Enter your: PPP Username PPP Password
- check PPP Auto Connect
- Select Block of Static IP Addresses. Then enter your:
- Gateway Address
- Subnet Mask
- then choose between Private LAN Subnet or Public Static Subnet NOTE: If you check Private LAN Subnet, the modem will assign all devices on the network a LAN IP address (example: 192.168.0.4) except for devices that have TCP/IP settings manually configured to use a Public Static user assignable IP address from your leased block. If Public Static Subnet is checked, the modem will assign all devices on the network a static public IP.
- If you are a QwestOffice.net, Qwest.net or MSN customer select Static DNS, then enter Primary DNS 205.171.3.65 Secondary DNS 205.171.2.65
- Click Apply.
