1000008e - 0x0000008e - Blue Screen of Death - Windows Has Recovered From An Unexpected Shutdown - The System Has Recovered from a Serious Problem

You may encounter the error message 1000008e - 0x0000008e - Blue Screen of Death - STOP 0x0000008e - STOP 0x00000050 PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA - Windows Has Recovered From An Unexpected Shutdown - The System Has Recovered from a Serious Problem.  Upon reboot, you may see the error message with details: "BCCode: 1000008e, BCP1: C0000005, BCP2: 00000000, BCP3: 8C73D988, BCP4: 00000000."  In the Event Viewer, you may see the Event ID 1001: "The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck.  The bugcheck was: 0x0000008e (0xc0000005, 0x00000000, 0x8c73d988, 0x00000000). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP."

The error message 0000008e normally indicates an issue with RAM.  The issue most likely involves RAM that is not installed in pairs using matching RAM Type, RAM Speed and RAM Size or bad RAM.  To resolve this issue, RAM should be installed in pairs using matching RAM Type, RAM Speed and RAM Size.  You will also want to scan for bad RAM using the Microsoft Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool or
Memtest86.

This issue can also be caused by the use of Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.0 and earlier versions.  Microsoft Knowlegebase Article KB310628 documents this issue.

When using Microsoft Windows Server, you may encounter the error message: "Unable to create a shadow copy."  In the Event Viewer, you may find the following Event: "Event ID: 7001 - Source: VSS - Unable to create a shadow copy."  This event involves the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).  Most likely the Server was rebooted while creating a Shadow Copy.  Many websites describe deleting or renaming the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WBEM directory used by Windows Management Instrumentation to resolve this issue.  This is not correct.  Following are the steps to resolve this issue: Double-click My Computer.
