Symantec Backup Exec - e0008115 - Physical volume library, or robot paused, offline, or disabled

When you view the Properties for a failed backup job within Symantec Backup Exec, you may see the error message e0008115 - Physical volume library, or robot paused, offline, or disabled.  This may be an indication that the tape drive requires cleaning or that you have a bad tape.

Cleaning The Tape Drive
  1. Insert the Cleaning Tape into the Tape Drive.

  2. When inserted, the Cleaning Tape will automatically perform the Cleaning Process and automatically eject after a brief moment.

  3. Re-insert the Cleaning Tape a few times to fully clean the tape drive.
Refresh Symantec Backup Exec Device Pool

You may find that after Cleaning The Tape Drive using a Cleaning Tape and Replacing The Potentially Bad Tape with another tape produces the same error message.  Since it is unlikely that you have multiple bad tapes, the problem is most likely within the Symantec Backup Exec Device Pool.  Following are the steps to resolve this issue:
  1. From within the Microsoft Windows System Control Panel - Hardware Devices, right-mouse click the Tape Drive and select Uninstall.

  2. From within Symantec Backup Exec - Devices, right-mouse click the Tape Drive found in Device Pools - All Devices and select Remove.

  3. From within Symantec Backup Exec, click the Services button in the lower right-hand corner and select Stop All Backup Exec Services.

  4. From within the Microsoft Windows System Control Panel - Hardware Devices, right-mouse click the Computer and Scan For Hardware Changes.

  5. From within Symantec Backup Exec, click the Services button in the lower right-hand corner and select Restart All Backup Exec Services.

  6. Close Symantec Backup Exec.

  7. Re-open Symantec Backup Exec.

  8. From within Symantec Backup Exec - Devices, right-mouse click Device Pools - All Devices and select Add Device.

  9. Place a check mark in the All Devices check box and click OK.
The Symantec Backup Exec Device Pool is now refreshed and the backup job should now go back to working.

Conclusion

It is important to note that this issue may recur again due to a potentially bad tape.  If there is a bad tape, it is important to fully identify which of the tapes is actually the bad tape and discard it once it has been isolated.  Without the Symantec Backup Exec Device Pool being refreshed, this error message would have falsely identified a good tape as a bad tape.  The solution then is to begin using each of your tapes.  If within a short period of time this error recurs again, the presently inserted tape is most likely the bad tape.  However, this error may also have occurred simply because the tape drive required cleaning and therefore none of the tapes may in fact be bad.

On A Side Note

You may wish to update the Firmware of the Tape Drive as well as the Windows Driver used by your Tape Drive.
