How does a computer become infected with malware?

Following is a list of the most common reasons why a computer has become infected with malware:
  1. From email when opening an infected email attachment.
     
  2. From infected files being copied onto the computer from another computer.

  3. From downloading a file of any type from a website or file sharing network.

  4. From another computer at your location on a wired or wireless network.

  5. From an infected task being placed in the Task Scheduler (c:\windows\tasks).

  6. From Security Settings being changed within Microsoft Internet Explorer.

  7. From Security Settings being changed within Windows Security Center.

  8. From the Windows Firewall being Disabled or Settings being changed.
     
  9. From Group Policy Settings being changed within Microsoft Windows.

  10. From not updating Microsoft Windows with all Windows Updates.

  11. From not updating Microsoft Internet Explorer with all Updates.

  12. From not updating Oracle Java with all Java Updates.  Previous versions of Oracle Java should first be removed and then the latest version of Java installed.

  13. From not updating Adobe Acrobat Reader with all Reader Updates.

To minimize the possibility of a malware infection from occuring, please perform the following: A fully updated version of Microsoft Windows with all Service Packs and Windows Updates, an active and updated antivirus solution, a fully enabled Windows Firewall, a fully enabled Windows Security Center, a fully updated version of Microsoft Internet Explorer, a fully updated version of Sun Java and a fully updated version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Event ID: 7001 - Source: VSS - Unable to create a shadow copy

When using Microsoft Windows Server, you may encounter the error message: "Unable to create a shadow copy."  In the Event Viewer, you may find the following Event: "Event ID: 7001 - Source: VSS - Unable to create a shadow copy."  This event involves the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).  Most likely the Server was rebooted while creating a Shadow Copy.  Many websites describe deleting or renaming the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WBEM directory used by Windows Management Instrumentation to resolve this issue.  This is not correct.  Following are the steps to resolve this issue: Double-click My Computer. Right-mouse click the Hard Drive causing the problem. Click the Shadow Copies tab. Select the appropriate Volume. Click Disable. Click OK. How do you stop an unstoppable Windows Service?

You may encounter a Windows Service in Services that has the buttons for Start, Stop, Pause and Resume greyed out.  If you attempt to stop the Service using sc stop [servicename], you encounter the error message: "The requested control is not valid for this service."  To resolve this issue, please perform the following steps: Click Start - Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services. Double-click the relevant Service. Change the Service Start-Up Type to Disabled. Click Apply. Click OK. Hit CTRL-ALT-DEL on your keyboard. Select Task Manger.
