How do you restore a deleted file?

With the introduction of Microsoft Windows XP, the Volume Shadow Copy Service in Microsoft Windows routinely makes a backup of files and folders on a computer.  The probability of restoring files that have been deleted or modified is extremely high.

To restore deleted or modified files, perform the following steps:

Option 1

  1. Right-mouse click the File that has been modified or the Folder that contains the files and folders that have been deleted.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Click the Previous Versions tab.
  4. Select the date/time of the Shadow Copy that contains the files or folders that you wish to copy.
  5. Click View.
  6. Copy the relevant files and folders.
  7. Browse to your Windows Desktop and paste the files.

Option 2

  1. Install ShadowExplorer.
  2. Explore the Shadow Copies using ShadowExplorer.
  3. Connect External USB Drive to Computer.
  4. Recover data to External USB Drive.

Please Note: Shadow Copies does not apply to a drive that has been formatted.  If you have formatted the drive, you have deleted all data on the drive including Shadow Copies.  Also note that if you are attempting to access Previous Versions in Windows Server 2003, you need to browse to the location using the UNC Path not the Drive Path.

Option 3

  1. Remove hard drive from Computer.
  2. Connect hard drive to Secondary Computer.
  3. Install Piriform Recuva on Secondary Computer.
  4. Connect External USB Drive to Secondary Computer.
  5. Recover data to External USB Drive.
