Updating Symantec Backup Exec Services When Domain Administrator Password Is Changed

When you change the domain administrator password, you will then want to update the Symantec Backup Exec Services that depend upon this password in order for Symantec Backup Exec to function. The following Symantec Backup Exec Services normally depend upon the domain administrator service account:

• Backup Exec Agent Browser
• Backup Exec Device & Media Service
• Backup Exec DLO Administration Service
• Backup Exec DLO Maintenance Service
• Backup Exec Job Engine
• Backup Exec Server
• SQL Server (BKUPEXEC)

Please perform the following steps for each of the Symantec Backup Exec Services listed above:


  1. Click Start – Administrative Tools – Services.
  2. Double-click the Service.
  3. Click the Log On tab.
  4. Confirm that the Service has This Account selected and that the Log On account being used is the domain administrator. Example: DOMAIN\administrator.
  5. In the Password field, type the new password.
  6. In the Confirm Password field, type the new password.
  7. Click OK.

    Once you have completed the process of updating each of the Symantec Backup Exec Services with the new domain administrator password, please perform the following:

  8. Double-click the Symantec Backup Exec shortcut.
  9. Click the Services button.
  10. Click the Stop All Services button.
  11. Once all of the Services have stopped, click OK.
  12. Click the Start All Services button.
  13. Once all of the Services have started, click OK.
  14. Click Close.
  15. Click Cancel.
  16. Click Yes.
  17. Once Symantec Backup Exec has closed, double-click the Symantec Backup Exec shortcut to reopen the application. The application should now run as normal.

When using Microsoft Windows Server, you may encounter the error message: "Unable to create a shadow copy."  In the Event Viewer, you may find the following Event: "Event ID: 7001 - Source: VSS - Unable to create a shadow copy."  This event involves the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).  Most likely the Server was rebooted while creating a Shadow Copy.  Many websites describe deleting or renaming the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WBEM directory used by Windows Management Instrumentation to resolve this issue.  This is not correct.  Following are the steps to resolve this issue: Double-click My Computer. How do you stop an unstoppable Windows Service?

You may encounter a Windows Service in Services that has the buttons for Start, Stop, Pause and Resume greyed out.  If you attempt to stop the Service using sc stop [servicename], you encounter the error message: "The requested control is not valid for this service."  To resolve this issue, please perform the following steps: Click Start - Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services.
