SFC /SCANNOW - Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache.

When you attempt to execute SFC /SCANNOW within Microsoft Windows XP, you may encounter the error message: "Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the
DLL Cache.  Insert your Windows CD-ROM now."  If you have a Windows XP CD which matches the present Service Pack of your installation, you can easily resolve this issue by inserting your Windows XP CD into your CD-ROM drive.  However if you do not have the proper version of the Windows XP CD for your installation, the following steps will resolve this issue:

Method 1 (CDROM)
  1. Using nLite, merge the present version of your Windows XP CD with the appropriate Service Pack for your installation.  You can determine your present version of Windows XP by clicking Start - Run, typing winver and then clicking OK.

  2. Burn the nLite iSO to CD and then insert it into your CD-ROM drive.
Method 2 (Hard Drive)
  1. Using nLite, merge the present version of your Windows XP CD with the appropriate Service Pack for your installation.  You can determine your present version of Windows XP by clicking Start - Run, typing winver and then clicking OK.

  2. Copy the I386 directory from the nLite ISO and paste it into the root of the C Drive.  So the path is now C:\I386.

  3. Click Start - Run.

  4. Type: regedit

  5. Click OK.

  6. Browse to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

  7. Double-click SourcePath and change the present value to: C:\

  8. Double-click ServicePackSourcePath and change the present value to: C:\

  9. Reboot.
This issue has now been resolved.  You can now execute the command SFC /SCANNOW without problem.
