How do you password protect a Linux/Apache folder?

To password protect a Linux/Apache folder, please perform the following steps:
  1. Create the subdirectory you wish to password protect.
  2. Confirm that the subdirectory you created is CHMOD 711 or 755.
  3. Create a file called .htaccess
  4. Add these lines into your .htaccess file:

    AuthType Basic
    AuthName "Password Required"
    AuthUserFile /home/subdirectory/.htpasswd
    require valid-user

    Note: Change the path for .htpasswd to the path of your home directory.  If you do not know your path, you can run the phpinfo command from within an HTML document.

  5. FTP .htaccess to the subdirectory created in Step 1.
  6. Using your FTP client, CHMOD .htaccess to 644.
  7. Now create your .htpasswd file.
  8. To add users to this file, you can visit PowWeb's Password Encryptor.
  9. Now simply copy and paste the line of text containing the username and encrypted password to your .htpasswd file.
  10. FTP .htpasswd to the subdirectory created in Step 1.
  11. CHMOD .htpasswd to 644
The directory is now password protected.

Event ID: 7001 - Source: VSS - Unable to create a shadow copy

When using Microsoft Windows Server, you may encounter the error message: "Unable to create a shadow copy."  In the Event Viewer, you may find the following Event: "Event ID: 7001 - Source: VSS - Unable to create a shadow copy."  This event involves the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).  Most likely the Server was rebooted while creating a Shadow Copy.  Many websites describe deleting or renaming the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WBEM directory used by Windows Management Instrumentation to resolve this issue.  This is not correct.  Following are the steps to resolve this issue: Double-click My Computer. How do you stop an unstoppable Windows Service?

You may encounter a Windows Service in Services that has the buttons for Start, Stop, Pause and Resume greyed out.  If you attempt to stop the Service using sc stop [servicename], you encounter the error message: "The requested control is not valid for this service."  To resolve this issue, please perform the following steps: Click Start - Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services. Double-click the relevant Service. Change the Service Start-Up Type to Disabled. Click Apply. Click OK. Hit CTRL-ALT-DEL on your keyboard. Select Task Manger.
