What are essential tools for Web Design?

This is a great question.

  1. HTML Editor: Macromedia Dreamweaver is a prequisite. Other HTML Editors tend to modify your HTML without your knowledge. Examples of of this include corrupting Javascript embedded in your HTML document or inserting needless MetaTags. Dreamweaver is very nice because it keeps your HTML document intact in the manner that you had originally designed it. URL: http://www.macromedia.com

  2. Image Editor: Adobe Photoshop is also a must. Both Macromedia Dreamweaver and Adobe Photoshop maintain their lead on the forefront of web design software. Adobe Photoshop is a very diverse program that makes image creation/photo manipulation a very simple task with professional results. URL: http://www.adobe.com

  3. Search: It may sound odd, but when designing PHP, HTML and other documents you need a product that will quickly find a particular line of code within a document for you to modify. Sowsoft's Effective File Search is very quick at searching within documents and offers a number of features that are an incredible time-saver. URL: http://www.sowsoft.com

  4. Replace: Although Advanced Find & Replace will find as well as replace, I have found Sowsoft's Effective File Search much more capable with finding lines of code not replacing. The replace features however in Advanced Find & Replace are an incredible time-saver. When I use this product, I first make a backup of my web pages. Then knowing the particular line of code that I wish to modify, I run Advanced Find & Replace. URL: http://www.abacre.com

  5. Text Editor: Another perhaps odd tool that is also an incredible time-saver is EditPlus. EditPlus allows you to edit PHP, HTML, Perl CGI, etc. in a quick and easy manner. I often use Effective File Search to locate the document that I want to edit and then using EditPlus to locate that line within the document for editing. URL: http://www.editplus.com

  6. FTP: There are a number of products in the marketplace for transferring your documents from your computer to your web host. My personal preference is Globalscape's CuteFTP. URL: http://www.cuteftp.com

Event ID: 7001 - Source: VSS - Unable to create a shadow copy

When using Microsoft Windows Server, you may encounter the error message: "Unable to create a shadow copy."  In the Event Viewer, you may find the following Event: "Event ID: 7001 - Source: VSS - Unable to create a shadow copy."  This event involves the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).  Most likely the Server was rebooted while creating a Shadow Copy.  Many websites describe deleting or renaming the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WBEM directory used by Windows Management Instrumentation to resolve this issue.  This is not correct.  Following are the steps to resolve this issue: Double-click My Computer. Right-mouse click the Hard Drive causing the problem. Click the Shadow Copies tab. Select the appropriate Volume. Click Disable. Click OK. Click Start - Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Scheduled Tasks. Delete all tasks related to the Volume Shadow Copy Service. Reboot the Server. Double-click My Computer. How do you stop an unstoppable Windows Service?

You may encounter a Windows Service in Services that has the buttons for Start, Stop, Pause and Resume greyed out.  If you attempt to stop the Service using sc stop [servicename], you encounter the error message: "The requested control is not valid for this service."  To resolve this issue, please perform the following steps: Click Start - Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services. Double-click the relevant Service. Change the Service Start-Up Type to Disabled. Click Apply. Click OK. Hit CTRL-ALT-DEL on your keyboard. Select Task Manger.
