Watchguard Technologies IPsec Mobile VPN Virtual Adapter - No DNS Server

When you connect to a Watchguard Technologies IPsec Mobile VPN, you may find that your Watchguard Secure Client Virtual NDIS6 Adapter has not obtained a DNS or WINS Server.  Therefore, you are unable to access network resources by hostname.  Watchguard Technologies Support may tell you the process of obtaining DNS and WINS is automated when you define DNS and WINS in Network - Interfaces.

  • Select XTM Web UI - Network - Interfaces - DNS Server - DNS Server IP

  • Select XTM Web UI - Network - Interfaces - WINS Server - WINS Server IP

After defining this information in Network - Interfaces and then saving the Watchguard Fireware configuration, you may find the Watchguard Secure Client Virtual NDIS6 Adapter ipconfig /all still does not display a DNS or WINS Server.  The DNS displays as fec:0:0:0:ffff::1%1, fec:0:0:0:ffff::2%1 and fec:0:0:0:ffff::3%1 (IPv6) ala 169.254.xxx.xxx (IPv4) ala DNS is unavailable.  Although the Watchguard XTM does not prompt to do so - you may find that after you reboot the Watchguard, the Watchguard Secure Client Virtual NDIS6 Adapter ipconfig /all now displays the defined DNS Server.

Optionally, you can define DNS and WINS within the ShrewSoft VPN Client configuration file.  You can then export the file from the ShrewSoft VPN Client for use by fellow staff members.

You may encounter the following error message when using the L2TP/IPSec VPN Client that is native to the Windows Operating System: "The L2TP connection attempt failed because the security layer encountered a processing error during initial negotiations with the remote computer."  This error message typically occurs when you are using the wrong Pre-Shared Key for your L2TP VPN.  This error message can occur when other components of your configuration are incorrect but the first thing to confirm is that you are using the correct Pre-Shared Key. If you are using the wrong Pre-Shared Key, the L2TP VPN connection will say Connecting for a long period of time and then display the error message: "The L2TP connection attempt failed because the security layer encountered a processing error during initial negotiations with the remote computer." If you are using the wrong username or password, the L2TP VPN will immediately respond with: "The remote connection was denied b...
