Before Installing Antivirus and Microsoft Office

In Microsoft Windows, it is important there is only one installation of Antivirus and Microsoft Office.  Installing more than one Antivirus Application or more than one version of Microsoft Office will result in the computer being corrupted - no longer stable nor secure.

Before Installing Antivirus

When antivirus is uninstalled, the computer must be rebooted in order to complete the uninstallation process.  To check if an antivirus application has not been properly uninstalled and requires the use of an antivirus removal tool, please do the following:

  1. Click Start - Run.

  2. Type: regedit

  3. Click OK.

  4. Browse to the registry key, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE

If you see entries such as AVG, Symantec, McAfee,  etc. and these products are not in Add/Remove Programs then these products were not properly removed.  Most likely the computer was not rebooted when the uninstallation process prompted to reboot the computer and then another antivirus application was installed on top of the existing antvirus.  Run the appropriate Removal Tools for the Antivirus Applications that are still installed.  After running the Removal Tools, reboot the computer to complete the removal process.

Before Installing Microsoft Office

Like Antivirus Applications, Microsoft Office must be a single installation on the computer.  To check if all previous versions of Microsoft Office have been removed and the computer rebooted, you can check:

  • Add/Remove Programs

  • Start - Programs - All Programs

  • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office

In the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office or C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office directory, you should only see one directory named below.  If you see more than one directory, it is most likely the computer was not rebooted when the uninstallation process prompted to reboot the computer and then another version of Microsoft Office was installed on top of the existing version of Microsoft Office.  If you see more than one version of Microsoft Office, you will need to uninstall all versions of Microsoft Office using Add/Remove Programs as well as the Microsoft FixIt Removal Tools, reboot the computer and then install a single version of Microsoft Office.

The L2TP connection attempt failed because the security layer encountered a processing error during initial negotiations with the remote computer.

You may encounter the following error message when using the L2TP/IPSec VPN Client that is native to the Windows Operating System: "The L2TP connection attempt failed because the security layer encountered a processing error during initial negotiations with the remote computer."  This error message typically occurs when you are using the wrong Pre-Shared Key for your L2TP VPN.  This error message can occur when other components of your configuration are incorrect but the first thing to confirm is that you are using the correct Pre-Shared Key. If you are using the wrong Pre-Shared Key, the L2TP VPN connection will say Connecting for a long period of time and then display the error message: "The L2TP connection attempt failed because the security layer encountered a processing error during initial negotiations with the remote computer." If you are using the wrong username or password, the L2TP VPN will immediately respond with: "The remote connection was denied b...
